The Wealth of Egypt: Tombs and Camels

In spite of all this, they still sinned; despite his wonders, they did not believe. 

Psalm 78:32

By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, ²⁵ choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. ²⁶ He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward.

What do we do when we are lost in life? This is really an important question because we often are lost. Disney movies highlight the development of characters who are lost in the woods, and then find their confidence and their true selves. But it doesn’t take a big bad guy to save us. What we must do is remember what has happened in the past. What we must do is remember that it didn’t just happen, but that God did amazing works to get us here to today. Psalm 78 is the story of Israel not remembering the works of God in their lives. In spite of his majestic works, they did not believe. 

And I think we too would be tempted to not believe if we’re simply lost and going aimlessly. The world around us is all about evolution. We are expected to move with the flow progressively getting better and better. This isn’t just about creation vs evolution. This is about how the evolutionary process is applied to our personal lives. And in the end it’s empty. There is no hope if I’m just randomly evolving. What if I’ve evolved in the wrong direction. This is not the teaching of scripture. Scripture reminds us that God has worked in your past and my past. He saved Israel. And we can’t forget that when we look forward. The difficulty is that we don’t know the future. But if we remember the past, we can live with faith in God that he is at work for good in our lives. 

Remember the faith of Moses. He was adopted as the son of Pharaoh, one of the richest rulers around. But he rejected that. He knew that he would be more richly rewarded through Christ than through Pharaoh. No tomb of Egypt full of gold compared to the riches Moses inherited in Christ. And the same goes for you and me. We can’t know the next step in our lives, but we can trust that God is at work through the steps we take as we take them in faith.
